Lapworth and Packwood church walk

Lapworth & Packwood church walk

A beautiful walk that crosses some of our most gorgeous local churches, located between Solihull and Henley in Arden.

Distance 4.8 miles

Difficulty 2/10

Starting at the Oak pub just off the Stratford Rd, 5 miles from Solihull in Hockley Heath. The public footpath is at the back off the car par through the car valetting area.

Go through the gate and cross the Rd the takes you on to an open field.

Head across the field bearing right.

You will come a large gate, at this point you need to stay right and head toward the M40 motorway which you can hear rumbling awayin the background.

In the corner of the field there is a gate onto another field which heads down hill. Watch out for the rabbit holes and be prepared to see the rabbit scatter as you walk through.

Head over a very well maintained bridge and you have a short climb up to Lapworth church – it’s a wonderful sight even from this distance. Once you’re over the hill it is just a short hop over a style and you’re at the church. It’s definitely worth looking round this local historic building.

You can walk through the church grounds with the route picking up from the opposite side you came in. Follow the path down past a lake on your right; this will bring you out at Lapworth cricket club.

Watch out for flying leather as you skirt round the outfield and take the gate clearly visible towards the back of the club house.  Follow the route through open field until you come out on the canal. Continue south toward Stratford till you come to a bridge where you need to come off the canal.

Cross the rd and via left – this is sign posted Packwood house.

Walk on the road  for ¼ of a mile, there is a public foot path on your right – go through the gate.

This takes you at the back of Packwood house, which i think gives you the best view of this national trust house.

The path brings you on to another road where you should head right. At the end of this road you will arrive at a T junction – head left and the Public footpath is on your left.

There are two paths but you need to go straight on. This path then splits in two – stay right towards and head towards Packwood church. It’s a very small quaint church – we think it’s a little hidden gem

With the moat on the left hand side return to a road where you need to head left for just under a mile. Cross the old Warwick road up a small lane where you rejoin the canal at a small Warf. Take a right at the canal heading in the Solihull direction.

Enjoy walking along this quite stretch of the Stratford canal stopping at an old retracting bridge (you need to cross)

Follow the path and stay right over a field of purple flowers. This brings you out back on the Stratford rd, take a left and it’s a short walk to the Barn pub.

My preference is to stop for a pint of Guinness and some of the best local food around……
